5G Network in Development for Beijing Winter Olympics 2022

On Dec. 26, exactly one year after China Unicom became the official telecommunication services partner of the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing, the company held a launch event entitled “5G enabling smart Winter Olympics”.

Three major plans for the Olympic Games were released at the event, including security, development and improvement.

The security plan states that China Unicom will provide the 5G network that is high speed, low latency and broad connection. The 5G network will come to benefit the Organizing Committees of Olympic Games, as well as athletes, audiences, media and other relevant personnel. At the same time, the telecom company will make full use of technologies such as virtualization, artificial intelligence and edge computing. 360-degree panoramic real time broadcast, VR immersive experience of match viewing and smart medical treatments will also be applied.

According to the development plan, China Unicom will develop a variety of scenarios and applications for smart Winter Olympics. It aims to provide intelligent solutions for the games, which might expand to industries such as smart cities, media, and internet of vehicles in the future.

The 2022 Winter Olympic Games are now three years away. Beijing will become the first city to ever host both the summer and winter Olympics. Venues of ice sports are being built around nearby areas of Beijing including Yanqing and Zhang Jiakou. At present, China Unicom has already launched its first batch of 5G mass trial projects in 16 key cities including Beijing, Xiong’an and Zhangjiakou.

On Oct. 27 this year, at the 2018 International Seminar on Future Information and Communications Technology, academician Wu Hequan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering stated that challenges still lie ahead in terms of the 5G applications for the 2022 Winter Olympics. In the beginning of this year, South Korea has made an attempt to build 5G network for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Technologies such as drones, AR and Internet of Things were showcased at the opening ceremony in PyeongChang.

At the 2018 World Internet Conference, Wu mentioned that the 5G license will be available by the end of this year.
