China Announces Official Opening of Beijing Daxing Airport

The Daxing International Airport, Beijing’s new airport, was formally opened by Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 25.

It is said to be the world’s largest terminal in a single building, and is expected to receive roughly 72 million passengers by 2025, according to The Paper.

The airport is located about 46km south of Tian’anmen Square, the world’s biggest public square. As the new facility takes up a total of 1.4 million square meters, including 700,000 square meters of core area, it equals the size of 63 such squares, according to Jiemian.

Seven domestic airplanes were supposed to take off from the new airport on the opening day.

Passengers can take the Daxing airport subway line from the city center to get to the new complex in just 19 minutes.

Cutting-edge technologies including facial recognition will be employed in the airport, allowing passengers of certain flights to use their faces as boarding passes. The security check channels have the capacity of checking 260 people per hour, which is 40% more efficient than traditional airports, according to staff member of the Beijing Capital Airport.
