Huawei CFO Thanks Employees In Her First Public Letter

Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou wrote a letter on May 9 to Huawei employees, thanking them for their support following her arrest. The letter is her first public comment since she was detained last December.

“Your concern gives me warmth, and your support provides me power. I believe that with every step I now take, I am surrounded by 188,000 Huawei people,“ Meng wrote in an internal company letter published on May 13 by Global Times.

Meng describes how cheered up she was by the messages she received from Huawei employees expressing their concern about her safety, and how their support “touched [her] heart in an indescribable way.”

Meng, daughter of Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei, was detained in Canada at the request of the U.S. Justice Department last year. She is accused of defrauding HSBC bankers by painting a false picture of Huawei’s alleged operations in Iran that breach U.S. sanctions.

Meng’s lawyer informed the Canadian court last week about his concerns that the allegations against her were politically motivated. Meanwhile, Huawei has stated that it places faith in the Canadian system of justice, while offering support for Meng’s legal arguments.

Meng’s next court appearance is slated for September 2019. Upon her bail application the judge said the extradition case could last months if not years.
