Huawei Holds 2021 Annual Report in Shenzhen, Recording Revenue of $100B

Telecommunications and consumer electronics giant Huawei Technologies held its annual report for 2021 in Shenzhen on Monday, providing updates on its recent financial performance and shedding light on the vast, privately-held company’s transforming business model.

In 2021, Huawei generated revenue of 636.8 billion yuan ($99.9 billion), down 28.6% year-on-year. Additionally, the firm achieved a net profit of 113.7 billion yuan with a net margin of 17.9%. Huawei’s revenue from the Chinese market amounted to 413.23 billion yuan in 2021, becoming its largest revenue source.

As of December 31, 2021, Huawei’s balance of cash and short-term investments reached 416.3 billion yuan, up 16.5% annually, while total short-term and long-term borrowings increased by 33,289 million yuan annually.

Research and Innovation

Every year, Huawei invests at least 10% of its sales revenue into R&D. In 2021, its total R&D expenditure amounted to 142.7 billion yuan, equaling 22.4% of the company’s total revenue. Both the total expenditure and ratio reached their highest levels in the past ten years.

Huawei has one of the largest patent portfolios in the world. It holds a total of 110,000+ active patents, across 45,000+ patent families.

Figures Concerning Employees

Huawei now has 195,000 employees, about 107,000 of which work in R&D. 131,507 employees are involved in the company’s employee shareholding scheme. Huawei also invested 15 billion yuan in global employee benefits in 2021.

Carrier Market

Third-party test results have shown that 5G networks have been built by Huawei for customers in 13 countries, including Switzerland, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, South Korea and Saudi Arabia.

To date, Huawei claims to have advanced over 3,000 industrial 5G applications, and has worked with carriers in over 100 countries and regions to build “green sites.”

Huawei said it has supported the deployment of related solutions in more than 100 countries and regions, which helped carriers save 84.2 billion kWh of electricity and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 40 million tons.

Enterprise Market

Over 700 cities and 267 Fortune 500 companies worldwide have chosen Huawei as their partner for digital transformation.

Huawei said it currently serves over 700 cities across more than 40 countries and regions. In China, Huawei’s smart city solutions have been implemented in more than 50 cities. Huawei serves over 2,000 financial institutions from more than 60 countries and regions, including 48 of the world’s top 100 banks.

In terms of energy, Huawei has established extensive partnerships with more than 190 electric power companies worldwide, and currently provides digital services to 17 of the world’s top 20 oil and gas companies and 17 of the world’s top 20 mining companies.


12 partners have launched PCs and servers based on Kunpeng motherboards. More than 10,000 solutions, developed by over 3,500 partners, have been certified as Kunpeng-compatible.

The openEuler community, an open source OS that supports digital infrastructure, has attracted nearly 10,000 contributors and more than 300 companies, research institutes, and universities, and has established nearly 100 special interest groups (SIGs).

More than 600,000 AI developers are using Ascend and more than 100 universities are teaching Ascend-specific AI courses. More than 600 solutions have been developed by over 500 partners from various industries, and the Ascend AI ecosystem is taking shape.

Cloud Computing

Huawei Cloud and its partners currently operate 65 availability zones worldwide, covering more than 170 countries and regions. Huawei Cloud has launched more than 220 cloud services and 210 solutions, and attracted 2.6 million developers worldwide. More than 6,100 applications are now available on the Huawei Cloud Marketplace.

In China, Huawei Cloud has served more than 600 e-Government clouds, helping more than 35 cities make the switch to cloud-native services. Huawei Cloud has also worked with financial institutions including China’s six major banks, all of the 12 joint-stock commercial banks, and top five insurance institutions.

Huawei Cloud has built more than 40 industrial internet innovation centers, helping 17,000 manufacturers with their digital transformation, and also serves 80% of China’s top 50 internet customers.

Device Business

HarmonyOS enables a vehicle’s own apps to connect seamlessly to devices such as smartphones and smart home systems, making fully-connected vehicles a reality. HarmonyOS has been deployed on more than 220 million Huawei devices. More than 4,500 products from over 1,900 ecosystem partners have joined HarmonyOS Connect. In 2021, over 115 million new HarmonyOS Connect devices were shipped.

Huawei also launched Huawei Mobile Services Core 6, which supports developers worldwide so that they can focus on app innovation. By the end of 2021, the number of monthly active users of Huawei devices around the world had topped 730 million.

Intelligent Automotive Solution

In the intelligent automotive solution domain, Huawei unveiled five innovative solutions: HarmonyOS Intelligent Cockpit, 4D imaging radar, MDC 810, the Huawei Octopus autonomous driving open platform, and an intelligent thermal management system.

In 2021, more than 300 partners joined Huawei up and down the value chain. By the end of 2021, Huawei launched more than 30 intelligent automotive components, and worked with car OEMs using models like Huawei HI and Huawei Zhixuan.

Two Huawei HI cars – the BAIC Arcfox Alpha S HI model and the Changan Avatar 11 – and one Huawei Zhixuan car – the AITO M5 – will gradually begin mass production and delivery in 2022. As always, Huawei denied that intends to make its own cars. Instead, says the firm, it will help car OEMs build better vehicles and to sell more of them.
