Huawei confirmed it would participate in the CES show in Las Vegas on January 9, which is January 10 in Beijing time. Its slogan is “new start,” suggesting that Huawei will take this opportunity to bring its flagship Mate 10 to the US.
Photos posted on Weibo on the eve of CES 2018 show billboards advertising the Huawei Mate 10 everywhere. The advertisement text reads, “The best mobile phone you’ve never heard of.” There is no doubt Huawei will enter the US market.
According to technology blog The Information, Huawei’s flagship Mate 10 will launch with an AT&T version in February. Huawei plans to spend $100 million on promotion. Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Huawei was in talks with Verizon to sell its phones.
At present, Huawei phones are mainly sold in the US through Best Buy and Amazon. But the US cellphone market is dominated by the operators. Users rarely buy bare phones. It’s not surprising that Huawei is trying to cooperate with a US operator.
Huawei shipped a total of 153 million handsets in China in 2017, accounting for more than 10 percent of the global market. Huawei ranks among the world’s top three handset makers and it continues to lead the Chinese market.
When entering the US, Huawei will have to compete directly with Apple for more market share.
