Meizu Denies Plans to Launch HarmonyOS Smartphone in 2023

A Chinese blogger leaked on Wednesday that Meizu plans to develop a mobile phone based on OpenHarmony, to debut next year at the earliest, as the first non-Huawei phone with HarmonyOS. However, Meizu responded: “No news received, and no comment.”

In May 2021, Meizu posted a picture on its official Weibo account with the words “Hello, HarmonyOS.” After Huawei announced its HarmonyOS system, Meizu became the first smartphone manufacturer to announce access to the HarmonyOS system. However, Meizu also said that Lipro, a smart home brand operated by the firm, would access HarmonyOS, while there are no similar plans currently for smartphones and watches.

On June 13, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation issued a public notice that Geely’s cell phone business company, Hubei Xingji Shidai Technology Co., Ltd., signed an agreement with Meizu and its shareholders involved in the transaction, in which Xingji Times intends to acquire 79.09% of Meizu’s equity.

Earlier this month, a blogger nicknamed “Changzhang Is Guantongxue” indicated that the version of cell phones and other terminal products equipped with the OpenHarmony system was on the schedule. The layout of related technologies was accelerated to facilitate easier access to cell phones, watches, speakers, computers, and more, for more manufacturers in the future, as well as system UI self-adaptation. At least three or four companies have already started planning to implement HarmonyOS in their new products.

Huawei will release HarmonyOS for its nova 10 smartphone series and Mate 50 and Pro series in the second half of this year, while the previous OpenHarmony 3.1 LTS is available to achieve the basic functions of the phone.
