MIIT Launches the Pilot Plan on the Application of New Energy Vehicle Power Swap Mode

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued a notice today in regard to a pilot plan for methods of new energy vehicle power swapping. The goal of the plan is to increase the number of vehicles with the ability to switch out power modules to over 100,000 and build over 100 power swap stations.

There are 13 cities included in the pilot, including 8 comprehensive cities (Beijing, Nanjing, Wuhan, Sanya, Chongqing, Changchun, Hefei and Jinan) and 3 cities with a number of heavy trucks (Yibin, Tangshan and Baotou). These cities have good industrial bases, experience in swapping power modules, potential for energy conservation and emission reduction, and strong policy support.

The list of pilot cities was decided by the MIIT after a notice issued in April. Today’s plan puts forward clear requirements and aims to set up a coordination mechanism in which safety protocols should be strengthened to guarantee the safe operation of power exchange stations and vehicles. MIIT also hopes to form replicable and scalable experiences through the pilot work.
