NetEase Cloud Music and WeChat Team Up to Launch New Function

WeChat, a popular social platform owned by Tencent, announced on Wednesday that the status sharing function in WeChat now supports a feature in which users can share songs from their NetEase Cloud Music account.

As a window for people to express how they are feeling and give a snapshot of their daily lives, WeChat’s status sharing function are seeing increasingly engagement among users. The cooperation between NetEase Cloud Music and WeChat won’t only expand the channels and ways for users to share songs, but also enrich the functionality of users’ WeChat status.

Aside from songs marked as “exclusive” for VIP members, all other music can be shared on WeChat’s status. To date, WeChat’s status sharing function has only been able to support the sharing of QQ music owned by Tencent. After this update, it can now support the function as long as the NetEase Cloud Music App is version 8.7.51 or above.

NetEase Cloud Music has had several music copyright confrontations with Tencent Music Entertainment in the past. On April 27, NetEase issued an article accusing Tencent Music that it had infringed upon NetEase‘s music copyright by illegally stealing and playing unauthorized songs, impersonating songs in batches, and copying NetEase‘s product innovation in a follow-up manner, which constituted unfair competition.

Now that NetEase Cloud Music is involved in WeChat’s ecology, the competition with Tencent Music will become more complicated. NetEase Cloud Music also disclosed its financial report for the first quarter of 2022 on Tuesday. According to the financial report, in the first quarter, NetEase Cloud Music’s revenue was 2.067 billion yuan ($309.51 million), up 38.6% year-on-year, and the company’s adjusted net loss was 152 million yuan, down 46.6% year-on-year.
