NetEase Responds to Layoffs in ‘Marvel Rivals’: Organizational Structure Normal Adjustment
NetEase‘s popular game ‘Marvel Rivals’, a PVP team shooting game, has attracted 20 million players in just a few days, quickly becoming one of the hottest games on Xbox, PlayStation and Steam platforms.
On February 19th, the American team of “Marvel Rivals” encountered a large-scale layoff. Level designer Jack Burrows expressed on LinkedIn that he had just been laid off. The news shocked the entire industry, and many players left negative reviews on Steam as a result.
In response to this, NetEase stated to Wccftech that this is a normal organizational adjustment:
We recently made a difficult decision to adjust the development team structure of ‘Marvel Rivals’ for organizational reasons and optimize the game’s development efficiency. This resulted in layoffs for a design team in Seattle, which was part of the larger global design department supporting ‘Marvel Rivals’. We appreciate the hard work and dedication of the affected employees and will treat them with confidentiality and respect, acknowledging their contributions.
We assure fans that the core development team of ‘Marvel Rivals’ will continue to be led by Chief Producer Wu Weicong from Guangzhou, China, and Game Creative Director Chen Guangyun. They will remain committed to providing an excellent gaming experience. We are increasing investment in the evolution and growth of this game rather than reducing it. We are excited to introduce new superhero characters, maps, features, and content to ensure an engaging real-time service experience for our global player community.
NetEase also announced that the faction registration for the recent Marvel Rumble Championship (MRC) in North America has reached its limit. After the upcoming update in the second half of the first season, this limit will be further increased.
