OPPO Announces Patent Related to AR Contact Lens

According to Chinese commercial inquiry platform Tianyancha, Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Co., Ltd., a smartphone manufacturer, has recently announced a patent for wearable electronic devices.

The summary shows that the equipment includes a contact lens and a display device. The display device is set on one side of the contact lens for displaying information. It has two display areas with varying light transmission rates, thus enhancing visual effects of the device and improving its AR function.

The patent application was apparently filed on October 14, 2020 and published on April 19, 2022.

Unlike the optical eye-tracking technology used in most VR/AR devices, AR contact lenses track eye movement through sensors that are applied directly to the surface of the eye.

On April 7, U.S. startup Mojo Vision also released its prototype of AR contact lens – Mojo Lens – on its official website.

However, the product is far from a fully-realized AR contact lens that can be worn for a long time, such as how to solve battery life problems and how to convince consumers to adapt to electronics that require direct contact with their eyes.
