On the evening of August 20, Smartisan Technology released its third new product of the year, the Nut Pro 2S smartphone, which is an upgraded version of the Nut Pro 2.

Smartisan new product launch

Smartisan plans to release four products in 2017, its CEO Luo Yonghao described the four products as “normal, radical, solid and hard-to-believe”. Normal and radical is referring to the Nut R1 and TNT Workstation previously released on May 15.

The launch event began with a quick roundup of the two products. Nut R1 has received positive comments ever since its release three months ago. “Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and Sony IMX 363 makes it a first-class Android phone for this year”, as reported by Sohu tech. The TNT, however, has been seen as a catastrophe, which Luo admitted with self-mockery.

In comparison, Nut Pro 2S is a medium range phone with innovative designs and software optimizations. Nut Pro 2S is very much similar to Pro 2 in its industrial design, adding on two more colors of red and blue to the classic black and white options. The red version of Pro 2S removed the thin golden line in the mid-frame which is adopted in Pro 2 to make the phone look thinner.

The Nut Pro 2S uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset, which marks a 15.7% elevation of single-core performance and 5% elevation of multi-core performance compared with Nut Pro 2.

The phone adopts a 12MP+5MP flagship AI dual-lens camera, equipped with the AI technology provided by Face++, an AI platform by Beijing Kuangshi Technology that automatically recognizes over 200 scenarios. Its front-facing 16 MP camera supports background blurring and instant beautifying effects.

Nut Pro 2S scores 95 in a rating by DxOMark

It is also noteworthy that Nut Pro 2S scores 95 in a rating by DxOMark, a leading image quality measurement platform, ranking slightly below the iPhone 8 plus (96) and higher than iPhone 8. The 95 score seems mediocre when compared with flagship products like Huawei P20 Pro and Xiaomi 8, however when taking price into consideration, Nut Pro 2S makes a worthy competitor.

Smartisan Nut Pro 2S Infinite Screen

One of the highlights of the launch is the introduction of Infinite Screen. The new technology creates a giant virtual screen which enables users to move the phone in the physical space to switch to a certain page. Luo believes this breaks the screen size limitation of traditional screens, especially during the industry’s incessant pursuit of higher screen-to-body ratios and thinner bezels. Luo demonstrated the Infinite Screen by using it to view the digital version of an ancient Chinese masterpiece Along the River during the Qingming Festival with Nut Pro 2s.

The 4GB RAM and 64GB storage version of the phone is priced at 1798 yuan ($263). Other two options of 6GB RAM and 64GB storage as well as 6GB RAM and 128 storage version are priced at 1998 yuan and 2298 yuan respectively.
