SVOLT Completes Cell Modules for XPeng P5 Model

On October 19, SVOLT, a lithium-ion battery system provider, announced that the battery cell modules matching XPeng Motors’ P5 models rolled off the production line. The XPeng P5 is an electric sedan launched by XPeng for which SVOLT supplies modules for the 550km version of this model.

The battery cell is produced in the company’s new AI intelligent factory where the SVOLT headquarters are located. It adopts the company’s unique stacking process technology, combined with the mid-nickel, high-voltage safety system, the battery cell features low internal resistance and higher safety. The mid-nickel high-voltage safety system utilizes the modular thermal insulation design of SVOLT’s Leng Feng (Chinese pinyin, meaning “cold bee”) system, which helps prevent the target battery cell from leaking should it be damaged.

SVOLT was formerly the battery division of Great Wall Motor (GWM), a traditional Chinese automobile manufacturer. Relying on GWM’s resources along with its own development and investment, the company has achieved substantial development. “At present, the installed battery capacity of SVOLT has reached the top ten in the world and the sixth in China. In addition to supplying GWM, it has also signed purchase contracts with many car companies,” Fu Xiaokang, vice president of Great Wall Motor, revealed in a media interview in September this year.

SVOLT has won nearly 50 designated projects from more than 30 customers around the world, among which domestic vehicle enterprises include Geely, Dongfeng Motor, Wuling Motors and Leapmotor. According to SNE Research, a South Korean market research organization, the cumulative installed capacity of SVOLT in the first ten months of 2021 was 2.1 GWh, a sharp increase of 890% year-on-year, making it the fastest growing among the top ten enterprises.

On the other hand, XPeng has grown its own diversified battery supply. Previously, due to the tight supply of lithium iron phosphate batteries, many orders of the XPeng P7 480E/N versions could not be delivered on time.

On September 21, Brian Gu, President of XPeng Motors, said that, at present, aside from CATL batteries, XPeng also uses batteries from many battery suppliers. XPeng has cooperation with EVE Energy Co., Ltd. and CALB. For the G9 model, XPeng worked with Sunwoda to develop a fast rechargeable battery for the vehicle model.
