Chinese consumer appliance manufacturer Midea Group announced on Saturday that it will be investing 13.5 billion rupees ($190 million) over the next five years to set up a Science and Technology Park in India.
Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei launched a new OpenLab in New Delhi, India last Friday. OpenLab aims to build an industry ecosystem and serve as an innovation platform for Huawei.
At the end of last year, Xiaomi accomplished a feat that no other smartphone manufacturer had been able to do in the past six years in India. Xiaomi surpassed Samsung to become India’s largest smartphone brand. This was an important milestone for the Chinese manufacturer, especially considering Xiaomi started selling phones just three years ago.
The latest market research data show that among the top 10 best-selling smartphone brands in India in Q4 2017, all except Samsung are Chinese manufacturers, whose total market share exceeds 50 percent.
The Indian market is where China’s smartphone manufacturers perform best with regards to internationalization. The Indian smartphone market grew by 14 percent last year, more than any other country. Chinese brands made up 53 percent of smartphone sales, according to the latest foreign media news.
Figures from two technology market research firms published on January 25 show that Xiaomi overtook Samsung as India’s largest smartphone maker in the fourth quarter of 2017. Previously, Samsung was the largest smartphone maker in India for six years in terms of sales volume.
Chinese mobile phone maker OPPO, which entered India four years ago, recently received a qualification for environmental assessment for its local mobile phone factory from the Indian government.
Xiaomi‘s sales are up sevenfold in India since the company’s India branch became profitable in the fiscal year that ended in March 2017. Indian consumers appear to prefer the high quality and low price of Chinese smartphones.
According to foreign media reports, Xiaomi, which has had two smartphones factories in India, will build its third smartphone factory in India, as well as builds a charge pal plant with India local companies.
Xiaomi plans to invest $1 billion in 100 Indian startups during the next five years, focusing on the construction of its smartphone ecosystem, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said in an interview with India Livemint on November 20.
Xiaomi and Samsung both shipped 9.2 million mobile phones, each accounting 23.5 percent of the Indian smartphone market during Q3, IDC reported on November 14. The two are now tied for India’s top mobile phone brand. The news marks the first time Xiaomi has caught up with Samsung to become the top smartphone in India.
Xiaomi released its international edition of MIUI 9 in India on November 2. The new system gives priority to a smooth experience, and is comparable to stock Android with its many new functions. Based on a study of foreign use cases, MIUI international edition also has many customized localization services to improve user experience.
Strategy Analytics released a report on October 29, showing Samsung still ranks first in the Indian mobile market with a 26 percent market share in Q3, Yonhap News Agency reported. Samsung has maintained its market share in India for a number of years.
