Zhang Yunfan Appointed As the Head of ByteDance’s Gaming Business

On May 31st, ByteDance announced important personnel changes in its gaming business. An internal email stated that Zhang Yunfan will be overall responsible for ByteDance’s gaming business and report to Hua Wei.

After Zhang Yunfan took office, Oasis Studio, Jiangnan Studio, Distribution Studio and other mature business lines as well as the newly established Guangzhou Studio and Shanghai Studio of ByteDance Games all reported to Zhang Yunfan.

It is reported that Zhang Yunfan founded the first domestic blog product “NetEase Tribe” in 2003. After leaving NetEase in 2005, he successively founded Duowan.com and 178.com. In 2010, Zhang Yunfan also served as the president of Zongheng website. He then joined Perfect World Games in 2013 as Vice President of Mobile Strategy and became President of TGBUS and PTBUS in 2014. In 2015, Zhang Yunfan held positions such as Chief Operating Officer of Perfect World and President of Perfect World Games Business Division, responsible for managing global research and development operations and platform businesses within the group. After 2016, Zhang Yunfan stepped down from his position as President of Perfect World Games Business Division to be appointed Director of Holding Group while serving as CEO of Literature Business.

On the other hand, this adjustment is the new round of organizational restructuring announced by ByteDance’s gaming business on March 14th. Perhaps it is also a clear signal that the dust has settled for ByteDance’s gaming business adjustment and has entered a new stage.

The internal email was jointly signed by Hua Wei and Zhang Yunfan, announcing that the game business will enter the “second stage”, adhering to long-termism and being more patient in product development and operation. The email mentioned, ‘Our goal is to ‘create fun games for users’, and the company’s mission ‘to inspire creation, enrich life’ will continue to be practiced in the gaming business.
