37 Chinese Mobile Games Revenue Exceeds $100M Overseas in 2020: Report

In 2020, a total of 37 Chinese mobile games have earned more than $100 million in overseas markets, according to the latest report from Sensor Tower.

The total revenue of the top 30 most profitable games on the App Store and Google Play reached up to $9.24 billion, an increase of 47% from $6.3 billion in 2019.

Tencent-backed Player Unknown’s Battleground’s mobile version, known as PUBG Mobile, continued to top the list with a revenue of $1.06 billion, a rise of 37% compared to the same period last year. The game recorded its best performance in May 2020 due to social distancing and lockdowns amid the spreading Covid-19.

In October 2020, the overseas revenue of miHoYo’s role-playing game Genshin Impact’s mobile version reached $160 million, setting a new record for the monthly revenue of Chinese mobile games in the global market. The previous record was held by PUBG Mobile, which generated a revenue of $90 million in 2019. 

Launched in September 2020, Genshin Impact received a positive welcome by players and critics alike, grossing more than $393 million in only two months after its debut.

During the past year, the top 30 mobile games attracted an overall $2.8 billion in the Japanese market, witnessing an increase of 81% year-on-year. Japan has since surpassed the U.S. to become the most popular overseas market for Chinese mobile games.

The entry threshold of the monthly Sensor Tower mobile game list, which is evaluated in terms of revenues and fluctuates around $10 million, also saw a substantial increase. The average entry threshold in 2020 was $10.24 million, up 60% from the 2019 average of $6.4 million.
