01.AI Plans to Split the Digital Human Business and Shut Down Some Projects

Several changes have recently occurred internally at the AI unicorn 01.AI founded by Kai-Fu Lee:

The plan is to split the digital human business, led by Yang Changpeng, head of R&D for 01.AI’s digital human business.

Lan Yuanchuan, project leader of 01.AI’s AI video editing project, will now focus on a new project called SparkView which is an AI video editing tool.

In response to the above information, 01.AI stated that it had revenue of over one billion last year and expects rapid growth this year. Not only is 01.AI continuously launching more applications to explore value, but it will also make quick adjustments to projects based on market product-market fit (PMF), including strengthening investment in certain businesses and encouraging projects with commercial potential to seek independent financing as well as shutting down some projects.

The theme of ‘splitting’ has been the main trend of restructuring in the past two years. In 2024, 01.AI took action on business split. According to business registration information, on September 13, 2024, 01.AI established a subsidiary named ‘Oasis’, mainly engaged in AI gaming related businesses. The co-founder and vice president of 01.AI, Ma Jie, serves as the chairman of this subsidiary. It is understood that splitting different businesses for independent operation and independent profit generation is actually a focus strategy after the integration of 01.AI with Alibaba Cloud’s pre-training team.
