Xiaomi’s First Gaming Laptop: Familiar Appearance Loaded with a Powerful Core

The laptop industry has a growth of offerings in its product lines, such as business laptops for offices, and gaming laptops for gamers. With the rapid development of e-sports in recent years, gaming laptops have also attracted more attention.

At the product release conference on March 27, Xiaomi officially unveiled its first gaming laptop.

Xiaomi‘s laptops traditionally have no logo in the front. Not surprisingly, its gaming laptop continues this practice. The Xiaomi gaming laptop comes in only one color: dark gray.

The laptop has four air outlets (most gaming laptops are designed with two air outlets): one on left side, one on right side, and two in the rear. Similar to most laptops, the air inlet is at the bottom of the laptop.

Computer ports are distributed along both sides and the rear. The laptop has one USB-C interface, four USB 3.0 interfaces, one headphone-microphone two-in-one interface, one microphone interface, one HDMI 2.0 interface, one three-in-one card reader and one gigabit network port.

The dimensions of Xiaomi‘s gaming laptop is 364.0mm x 265.2mm x 20.9mm, and at 2.7 kg in weight, it is considered a “lightweight” laptop.

Unlike most gaming laptops, the Xiaomi gaming laptop uses an unusual hidden piston design, similar to the HP Spectre released in 2016. The design achieves the visual effect of a floating screen.

Xiaomi‘s gaming laptop uses a 15.6-inch display screen with 1920×1080 resolution (142 PPI), with 178° wide view, 300 nits brightness and 72 percent NTSC color gamut. Its narrow borders are 9.9mm on each side, achieving a screen-to-body ratio of 81 percent.

The keyboard uses double curved keycaps and supports 30-key conflict prevention. It can also be seen from the image below that the laptop has a very large palm resting area.

The keyboard also features programmable function keys on the left of the keyboard, which is common for gaming laptops. Users can customize shortcut keys according to their needs.

Bright lighting effects are also indispensable in a gaming laptop. The lighting effects of Xiaomi‘s gaming laptop are featured in the keyboard area and on both sides of the laptop. Within the keyboard, the five programmable function keys on the left form one part, and the main keyboard area divides into three lighting parts.

The specific lighting effects has three different modes: breathing, waves and dazzling color, with five levels of brightness.

In addition to this version, the Xiaomi gaming laptop comes in three additional versions equipped with the NVIDIA GTX 1060 discrete graphics card. The technical specifications of the three versions are: i7 processor, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD and 1TB mechanical HDD; i7 processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD and 1TB mechanical HDD; and i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD and 1TB HDD.
