Meta, Huawei, Alibaba’s DAMO Academy and Others Found Metaverse Standards Forum

Microsoft, Meta, and 34 other companies and organizations have formed a standards group – Metaverse Standards Forum – for metaverse tech. The forum is supposed to foster open standards for augmented and virtual reality, and others.

Participants in the forum include 36 technology giants involved in the metaverse, such as Epic, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Sony, as well as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the main international standards organization for the World Wide Web. Chinese tech giants such as Huawei and Alibaba Group’s DAMO Academy are also on the list of founding members.

However, Apple has not yet appeared on this list. Well-known game companies such as Roblox and Niantic are also not among the participants in the forum, nor are some emerging metaverse platforms such as The Sandbox or Decentraland.

The metaverse is pushing forward the novel integration and deployment of diverse technologies for collaborative spatial computing, such as interactive 3D graphics, augmented and virtual reality, photorealistic content authoring, geospatial systems, end-user content tooling, digital twins, real-time collaboration, and more.

“The Metaverse Standards Forum is a unique venue for the coordination between standards organizations and industry, with a mission to foster the pragmatic and timely standardization that will be essential to an open and inclusive metaverse,” said Neil Trevett, President of Khronos. Trevett did not mention how Apple’s absence would affect this goal.
